Establishment of US Customs and Border Protection

Established on March 1, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) became the nation’s first comprehensive border, travel and trade agency. As the nation’s first unified border entity, the agency takes a comprehensive approach to border management and control, combining customs, immigration, border security, and agricultural protection into one coordinated and supportive activity. CBP headquarters are located in RRB/ITC.

NATO 50th Anniversary Summit

NATO’s 50th Anniversary Summit took place in Washington, DC, April 23-25 to commemorate the Alliance’s success in safeguarding freedom over the previous fifty years, and provide NATO leaders an opportunity to focus together on efforts to resolve the crisis in Kosovo and ensure stability throughout the region. While the Summit took place at the Mellon Auditorium, the event’s Media Centre was located at RRB/ITC, where current President Bill Clinton hosted a press conference and later a working lunch in the Pavilion Room for the North Atlantic Council.

Construction Begins

Construction began in 1990 under the direction of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation (PADC), Pei Cobb Freed & Partners of New York – in association with Ellerbe Beckett, Architects and Engineers of Washington, DC. 1n 1995, Congress voted unanimously to name the building after President Ronald Reagan, who had signed the legislation authorizing the building’s construction.
